Every Woman Super Woman 2: I Am Answering

What happens when you walk down the street? Do people say things to you? Do they stare at you, touch you, or make you uncomfortable? What do they say? What do you want to say back?

Above: extract from 'Every Woman Super Woman 2'.

Every Woman Super Woman 2 is the latest zine from Young Saheliya, Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre (ERCC) and Edinburgh Art Festival - with Amina Muslim Women’s Resource Centre, Stills Centre for Art and Photography and Out of the Blue Print. Designed by Rumana Sayed and developed through workshops delivered by our Prevention Project and Young Saheliya, exploring issues of so–called street harassment. It focuses on racist, sexist and Islamophobic street harassment, and it’s impact on young minority ethnic women and young Muslim women in Edinburgh today.

‘I enjoyed writing about how I feel and sharing my stories. It relieves stress in something I’m not able to talk about as a subject often.’ – participant in 'Every Woman Super Woman 2' workshops with ERCC and Young Saheliya.

‘It’s been really good to talk about something deemed taboo… it has created a platform for people – where they can feel safe and not judged – to talk.’ - participant in 'Every Woman Super Woman 2' with ERCC and Young Saheliya.

The workshops explored the impact of street harassment, framing it as an issue of violence and inequality with a specific focus on racism, sexism and Islamophobia, and looking at how we can reclaim our power through our words, writing and artwork. The poetry and creative writing in Every Woman Super Woman 2 is what resulted from these workshops and discussions.

The zine is being launched as part of LeithLate’s 2017 programme, alongside the Every Woman Super Woman 2 exhibition showcasing further photography and artwork by the young women who took part in the project. If you’d like to visit the exhibition and grab your copy of the zine, check out Edinburgh Art Festival’s facebook event or come along to Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Leith from the evening of Thursday 15 June - Saturday 17 June 2017. If you're unable to make LeithLate but would like to request a copy of the zine, or find out more about our prevention work, please email Nadine.Jassat@ercc.scot .
